Deep Space Omega #9

A quick note about my free fiction: this is raw draft with little editing. I don’t know where the story is going, or if it’ll even get completed on the blog. But it’s fun to do.

The clips from this story stay up for a limited time and then they will turn back into a pumpkin. Those available at the time I’m writing this are:

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

Part 4

Part 5

Part 6

Part 7

Part 8

Let’s proceed, shall we?

Deep Space Omega (#9)

by Dawn Blair

She swung the telescope to search for the shuttle. Where was it?

From somewhere else on the station, Jadz heard Mouse scream.

“No, no, no, no, no. Find the shuttle. Find the shuttle,” Jadz chanted.

Two more shots blazed across the vision of her lens. She swore her heart would stop completely if not for the compressions of her heavy breaths she dragged into her lungs. Jadz continued searching to the left, knowing she wasn’t yet to whatever the black ship was firing upon.

She caught sight of the shuttle now flying to the right. It seemed to be heading awfully fast toward the ship that had fired. Disbelieving that even astronomers, as non-mechanically savvy as they were, could be that unwise, she swung the telescope in the other direction hoping to find what they were flying toward. She discovered another black craft very similar to the first, but this one appeared on fire and spinning out of control. She wished the shuttlecraft would veer in direction and head back toward the station, rather than heading toward the chaos and destruction.

Jadz mind raced over the specs of the space station in her mind. She’d reviewed all the designs when she’d been stationed here to be prepared with knowledge of the layout. Of course, she hadn’t been ready for this. The edge of the galaxy was supposed to be safe.

A cold reality wrapped around her.

She was at the edge of the galaxy on a metal speck of space debris with no weapons, and she’d just found out there were dangers out here.

“Jadz!” she heard Mouse call, shocking her from her sudden numbness.

“Here,” she called back.

“Jadz, I need you up here.”

Jadz left the view from the telescope and climbed the ladder to communications. Mouse fought with computer settings on her terminal and a couple dials trying to clear out static from the nebula. Jadz had idea what she could help Mouse with until Mouse flipped a switch and the communication came over the speakers.

“Life pod… door… asphyxiation…” a broken male voice stuttered.

“They took in a life pod, but they can’t get it open,” Mouse translated.
